I write this with just the slightest note of nostalgia, as it’s February on the North Shore, which means big wave season is drawing to a close. If you’ve ever vacationed here from October through February, you’ve likely witnessed some of the most breathtaking big waves on the planet. Pure power, pure beauty, always thrilling! The North Shore’s famous big breaks are the Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beachand Waimea Bay. They offer up massive waves that swell to thirty feet or more—stuff better left to the pros, which is just fine because watching from the beach is a ton of fun.
This past year’s competition winners include: Taj Burrow who took the 2011 Reef Hawaiian Pro in Haleiwa, John John Florence with the 2011 Vans World Cup of Surfing title at Sunset Beach and Kieren Perrow, who won the 2011 Billabong Pipe Masters at Banzai Pipeline.
In the springtime, Sunset Beach is a great beach for sunbathing and Three Tables (across the street from Food Land) offers fantastic snorkeling for all ages. Of course, the best place to swim with turtles is right out in front of our own gorgeous two-bedroom vacation rental in Haleiwa. And our favorite restaurant after a day at the pool or beach is the perennial family favorite, Haleiwa Joes.
If you’re looking for organized day trips, choose from hiking, snorkeling, water adventure, shark tours, sunset cruises and whale watching. Ask us for ideas—we’d be delighted to share our favorites. The Honolulu Festival, which celebrates Hawaii’s ties with Japan, takes place in March, and another not-to-be-missed event is the weeklong We Are Samoa celebration in May.
Until next time … with much Aloha! Susan
